Digital Imaging (Intra-oral Sensors & Extra-oral Panoramic)

Dr. Van Kirk utilizes improved modern Digital Imaging Technologies within the office. Digital X-rays result in 1/6th or less of the radiation to you.  Indeed, the newest guidelines from the Oregon Health Authority and the American Dental Association indicate that Digital X-rays are so much safer that patients no longer have to wear protective heavy lead aprons.  Yay!  But additionally, Digital X-rays provide more precision in diagnosis, since we view the image on a large computer monitor, instead of holding a tiny traditional film up to the light!  Also, Digital X-rays allow us to see things we cannot see with our own eyes, such as cavities, abscesses, and bone level/health.  We can also examine the roots and nerves of teeth, diagnose lesions such as cysts or tumors, as well as assess damage from trauma.

Modern Digital X-rays are also generally more comfortable than traditional x-rays, can be taken much more quickly, and are available immediately for viewing (compared to traditional films that could take 15-30 minutes to process and/or correct if any anatomy was missed).  We have placed forward monitors in our treatment rooms so that we can easily show you your x-rays and any pathologies that those pictures reveal.

Digital imaging also allows us to store patient images, and enables us to quickly and easily transfer them to specialists or insurance companies.

Dr. Van Kirk chooses carefully which radiographs are taken, and when.  Our office uses not only digital Intraoral x-ray sensors, but also has a digital Extraoral Panoramic radiograph machine, which can reveal pathologies not just in the mouth but in other parts of your lower skull.

Intraoral Camera

Many patients, especially younger patients, are very familiar with the latest technology and are comfortable with the high tech practice. Computers and TV screens are their primary method of information processing.

Dr. Van Kirk utilizes Intraoral Camera technology that helps enhance your understanding of your diagnosis. An Intraoral Camera is a very small camera – in some cases, just a few millimeters long. An Intraoral Camera allows our practice to view clear, precise images of your mouth, teeth and gums, in order for us to accurately make a diagnosis. With clear, defined, enlarged images, you see details that may be missed by standard mirror examinations. This can mean faster diagnosis with less chair-time for you!

Intra oral cameras also enable our practice to save your images in our office computer to provide a permanent record of treatments. These images can be printed for you, other specialists, and your lab or insurance companies.
